About Birth Photography

Why should I choose to have a birth photographer?

I know you're probably thinking...why would I want another stranger in the room, especially one with a camera? The birth of your child is a monumental moment and often times you are so wrapped up in the labour process that it all ends up a blur. Birth photography gives you those memories to hang onto forever. The first moment you locked eyes on your little one, the first time having skin to skin with them, the first time family gets to meet them, and so much more. If you're worried about having another stranger in room, you'll be so focused on your labour that you won't even notice I'm there! A professional birth photographer prioritizes your comfort. I make sure to maintain distance so you don't have cameras in your face, I don't use flash and if you ever want me to leave the room at any point, I am happy to do so. I have never heard of someone saying they regret having a birth photographer.

When will you arrive at the birth location?

I will be on call nearing your due date and I recommend calling me when you are on your way to the hospital in active labour. Everyone's labour is different, however, so I will ask a variety of questions prior to your due date such as how your past deliveries went, how long you plan on labouring at home, etc in order to better predict when I should head over. I live in Scarborough so I can only take clients for birth photography in Toronto/GTA. I will also stay for 2 hours following the birth to take photos of you with baby and any family that might come to visit. Please let me know at any time if you want me to leave sooner for alone time as a family.

What will you be taking photos of during the birth?

This is really all up to you. Most families aren't interested in getting the nitty gritty details of birth caught on camera, yet that's what everyone's mind jumps to first when thinking of birth photography. Typically I take photos of the labouring process (details in the room such as monitors, the time, the setup for baby before they arrive, your support systems helping you through, etc.) and during the actual birth I am either off to the side or even behind you taking photos from your perspective, capturing the moment your baby enters the world, yours and families reactions/emotions, first time holding them, weighing and cutting the cord, etc. Prior to your due date, I like to meet with clients to go over what their expectations are and you have the power the veto any photos from being posted on my website that you are not comfortable with being public.

Yes I have a package available including maternity/birth/newborn photos for a discounted price compared to booking them separately. Details can be found on my pricing page.

What is the benefit to having a video of my birth experience?

Video provides an extra element to remembering an important event that photos just don't have. Many women say that they remember very little from the actual labour and birth experience. Listen to your child's first cry as they enter the world as many times as you like and see the raw emotion of everyone in the room during the birth as it unfolds. The addition of a perfectly chosen song makes birth videos guaranteed tear jerkers.
